Sometimes Kerry missed her neighbor, Karla, who she used to walk with while Karla was walking her dog. Or some of the regulars at the bookstore, or snarking on some of the sillier mandates from management. Just talking about everything or nothing.

Here, everybody hung on her every word. And they talked about important things, crops, the need for roshna, the threat of the Goa'uld, the Ori.

Aris kept her grounded, talking about ordinary things, and asking for explanations of earth things.

And sometimes, Kerry wished she could have brought Aris and Aadi home to show off to her married friends who'd been bugging her about being an old maid. Let Maria gloat over having gotten the high school quarterback. Kerry'd take her intergalactic bounty hunter any day.

The stargate was silver. The frame of the gate dull pewter gray...the surface of the event horizion of the wormhole it contained, mirror bright as polished silver. The kawoosh of it fountaining out was a beautiful sight.

And home was on the other side. All Kerry had to do was take one step.

Earth. America. Indiana. Home. Sweet corn and McDonalds and hot chocolate and television and comic books and cheesy B movies, video games and dogs and the sunday paper and car alarms.

All she had to do was take one step.

One step away from Aris.

Kerry looked away.

Spring was here. The birds were singing, or at least coughing rhythmically, Kerry thought to herself, and tried to remember which of the Discworld books she was quoting. Something in Ankh-morpork.

The weather was getting warmer. There were tiny star-shaped white flowers on the bushes around the mine entrance that Aris called Nitori's Tears, and they had a sweet, heavy perfume, almost like lilac. It even cut through the air pollution.

Kerry sat on the tailgate of an abandoned ore wagon, and picked apart the slice of bread from her mre, scattering crumbs for a baby tree-squig as it crept closer, unafraid.

Later, when she went into her trailer, she found a drinking glass full of Nitori's Tears.

Aris was the first man who ever gave her flowers.

Kerry had thought she'd seen Aris smile. That superior smirk when he was right and you were wrong. His amused smile at her antics. The twitch of the corner of his mouth. The bitter wry smile as he spoke of the years of slavery his people had suffered. The brief, broad, lightning flash smile that crinkled the corners of his eyes slightly. The mona lisa smile when she couldn't tell what he was thinking.

She'd never seen him smile until he introduced her to Aadi, his son. The son who had been born in slavery, but was now free.

That was a smile.

"They worshiped you. They worshiped you and you didn't come. You left them alone to face atrocity and for all your noble ideals, that disgusts me." Kerry was almost vibrating with indignation.

Anubis laughed. She turned to him. "And you keep a civil forked tongue in your mouth, snake. And could you please stop looking like George Dzundza, because that's just disturbing."

"We understand these things are hard for a young race...."

"And that's just it. You have no authority over me, by your own laws. I'm not an Ancient. We were the second evolution of this form. I follow in your footsteps, but I'm not one of you. And if you choose to stop me, you're interfering in our natural progress."

Anubis applauded. Kerry threw a cinnamon roll at him.

There was a pause while Mason fielded it and Rube smacked him.

Oma smiled, and handed her the check.

Kerry opened her eyes and looked at the swinging lid of the sarcophagus. She felt....good...for the first time in a long time. Like she'd had a full night's sleep. No pain, anywhere. And for some reason, the taste of maple syrup lingered in her mouth.

They'd unpacked the supplies. Food, water, mres...batteries and tape for the videocamera. With a smile that didn't reach his eyes, the Trust man produced a box of microwave popcorn and a slim dvd case. "A little reward for all your effort."

Kerry laughed. "Wormhole Extreme: Casket of Verity? Oh man, tell me Doctor Levant doesn't die again! This is cool, Boss, thank you."

Aris felt his face fall. He knew it was stupid...it had become a regular thing, spending time together after they quit for the day. He had no reason to expect it. No reason to expect anything.

"Hey Aris, mind if we watch this during the usual senet match? I think I'm starting to get the hang of the rules."

"Outrun the pauser, reason. Here lay Duncan,
His silver skin laced with his golden blood;
And his gash'd stabs look'd like a breach in nature
For ruin's wasteful entrance: there, the murderers,
Steep'd in the colours of their trade, their daggers
Unmannerly breech'd with gore: who could refrain,
That had a heart to love, and in that heart
Courage to make 's love known?"

The quote from Shakespeare ran uselessly through Kerry's mind as she stared. Blood. His blood was yellow.

She'd known all along that Aris's people were aliens, were genetically altered by the Ancients, who they called Nitori, but she'd never seen it, really seen it like that. An instinctive xenophobic shudder ran through her at the sight.

You look like me, but we're not the same.

"Cold, cold, cold..." Kerry sang, stomping snow off her boots and shaking out the tree-squig fur cloak before coming into the tel'tak. Aris laughed at her.

"And here I thought you were a northern girl."

"Believe it or what, there is a difference between Indiana and a little ice-age. As pretty as the glacier waterfall is, how about we go find a nice beach on the southern coast for a few days and come back when the blizzard's over? The cityship lasted for thousands of years, and mostly through orbital bombardment and Goa'uld occupation. It'll still be here next spring. This planet has landmass in the tropics, right? Let's go exploring."

"Come here. I'll thaw you out."

"Ooh. Even better."

Kerry wasn't sure just when it had happened. When she stopped being afraid of Aris and started being afraid for him. Somewhere in those long conversations in the maze below the mine where he'd kept apologizing for her abduction and telling her why she was needed and what she was. She'd recognized something in him, a kindred spirit. A man she respected. And at some point after that, she started noticing him as a man. Wanting to run her fingers through that spiky hair. Looking at the spread of his broad shoulders, his dancing hazel eyes. The lightning flash of a smile, and the way his eyes crinkled at the corners.

The L shaped gash on his cheek and chin, and how much she wanted to lick it.

Kerry was on the cot, and whatever she was looking at wasn't in this dimension any more. Aris found himself watching her breathe. She was breathing, still, for now.

The Trust man was still talking. "...getting too sick to be useful. Don't worry about it, Earth is full of people with the ATA gene who aren't in the military, who won't be missed. We have another candidate being picked..."

Aris turned, and the man was dead before he hit the floor. Aris gathered Kerry up in his arms. "Kerry. Come on. Come on. Be the Nitori who keeps the prophecy. Come back." He began to run for his ship, for the ha'tak across the valley and the sarcophagus in Sebek's chamber.
