Anyway, I'd love it if you guys would take a moment and tag your fics by fandom if you haven't already. If you can't get it to work, please let me know.

Kerry rested her head on his chest, and sighed. "I'll say one thing for the Ancients. You Ilempiri make one hell of an argument for Intelligent Design." He smiled at her, running a hand through her hair.

"Oh, you should have seen me before I got myself scuffed up."

She gently traced the L shaped gash running from his cheek across his chin. "What's the story behind this one?"

"Someone trying to slit my throat. I dodged."

"And this?" she touched his notched eyebrow.

"Jaffa threw me into a wall when I was ten for mouthing off."

"The star-shaped burn on your shoulderblade?"

"Tak...tachs. Remote weapon fire. That scarred? Knew I shouldn't have trusted Carter to do it right."

Kerry held up her forearm and pointed to a faint, inch-long line. "I was pet sitting for a neighbor. Angry cat."

"Never liked maus. Those things are dangerous."

She choked a half-laugh, half-sob. "Everything's dangerous."

"Hey," he kissed her. "I know. But I'm good at dangerous. And as much as I'd like to park the tel'tak and sit back, feeding each other grapes...."

"We need roshna and weapons. And you're a lot less likely to get yourself killed than the others. I just...I hate it, Aris. I hate the Goa'uld."

Kerry froze. Like a mouse under the shadow of a hawk, she froze. The cyborg's corpse still lay where it had fallen, unchanged by rot or corruption.

Mirrored eyes stared at nothing. Glass scales shimmered in the light of the torchstick. It was beautiful. And it defined the word abomination.

Kerry turned away, retching. She swallowed thickly, and stared at Aris. "How dare the Ancients leave that THING here for your people to stumble on?"

"The path of the Nitori is not for us to walk on," Aris said mock-piously. "That's what my sister Brenneka used to say. It's really bothering you. This Lorelei thing. Not the signal it puts out...it itself."

"All I am is my memory. Everything I've done, everything I've seen, everything I've read. That's all that I am. To have that taken by force....is the worst thing I can imagine." He looked at her for a long moment, and she smiled, sourly. "Pampered, soft, safe Earthling daughter of privilege that I am."

Aris shook his head. The latest attempt to distract Kerry from the effects of Lorelei during a manic phase was letting her bring a small music player into the mine. The odd melodies echoed weirdly through the caverns during her breaks. She sang along, moved with joy if not grace. Her hips swayed temptingly, as she spun and danced in the dim light.

It wasn't like any music he had heard, or dances he had seen. He vaguely remembered festival dances in his youth, for the coming of spring and winter. The Goa'uld sometimes kept pet dancers for entertainment...and most of the disreputable dives he'd dragged bounties out of had a scantily clad dancing girl around.

Kerry caught him watching, and laughed, and drew him into the dance.

Kerry sighed. Somehow, when she'd decided to stay on Ilempir, she hadn't factored in a lifetime of trying to see over the crowd. Planet of the supermodels, thanks to the Ancient version of Intelligent Design.

She liked tall men, always had. Literally being the shortest adult on the planet was a different story. Alysi was taller than she was and she was thirteen!

Luckily her status as the Nitori usually parted the crowd for her, or Aris was around to lend his shoulders as a seat. This time Aris was offworld and the mob of people were deliberately trying to stand between her and the newcomers. Who matched Aris's description of SG-1. Who were apparently here to rescue her and had two hundred of her inadverdant followers objecting strenuously.

"This week on Wormhole Extreme: Lemuria, Doctor Roland McCoy explains that the Archaics were stupid and now we're all going to die," she muttered, and charged into the fray.

Aris had barely stepped out of the tel'tak when she leaped. He caught her, awkwardly, and staggered back a step as she climbed him like a tree, wrapping her legs around his waist and her arms around his neck, and kissed the breath out of him, kissed him hard enough to bruise his lips. Kissed him and kissed him and kissed him.

He grasped her hips, and thought about carrying her back to the cabin. Everything in the hold could wait for unloading.

"Miss me?" he smirked at her, and realized that she was shaking.

"You're two weeks late, you bastard. I thought you'd been killed or captured. Don't ever do that to me again."

"Yes milady."

His hair was all shades. Copper-red, honey-dark, warm-amber. It couldn't quite decide if it was dark blond or reddish light brown. And there wasn't a single strand of gray, for all his years of torment. Kerry smiled, and ran her hands through his hair. The ridiculous cock's comb faux-hawk, spiky yet soft as silk, and the velvety shaved sides.

He murmured sleepily as she worked a scalp massage into the touch. Aadi's hair was redder...Hamel had answered her curious question, Barocna had been carrot-top red. Unusual for the Ilempiri...and one of the reasons Aris had been so desprete for status and power in the Goa'uld court.

Aris in a swimsuit took her breath away. If the SGC wanted to meet, to barter for the latest technological toy they'd retrieved thanks to Lorelei's Library, and do so in the middle of one of August's worst heatwaves, putting them up at the resort hotel was the least they could do.

Kerry didn't like the SGC anyway. She'd developed a slight claustrophobia about being underground from her Library work.

Watching O'Neill turn red when she pointed out that she was an American citizen, and so was Aris, by marriage, and they couldn't be held on the base without starting an interstellar war was also entertaining.

Aris had taken to the concept of swimming pools right off. Kerry leaned back, and watched the other women watching her husband, and idly enjoyed her role as some Washington powerplayer with her boytoy bodyguard.

Not now, not here. The Trust had come back for the Library in the middle of her wedding. Aris, not wearing his armor for once, had been shot. Only their other unexpected guests, SG-1 had weapons.

Aris. Aadi. Her new family. Hamel, Esa, Denndreia. The rest of the people scattered, screaming.

Like the memory of the Goa'uld raid on the three cityships.

Kerry stopped being afraid...and started to get angry. Rage filled her, white-hot. She barely heard the sizzling whine of the mini drones she had summoned as they went through the Trust thugs like ball bearings through jello.

When she looked around, she still saw fear in the others' eyes.

Afraid of her.

Kerry stood and looked at the grave that should have been hers, where Aris had buried the Boss. Aris was a few rows over at his family plot, and Kerry meant to walk over there later and pay her own respects.

Part of her still couldn't believe it. Part of her had known it since her abduction.

We think we're free because we can't see the chains that bind us. For all his talk about patriotism and service and all good things in government...I was a tool to be used and discarded. A cockroach who had learned a trick. Is it absolute power corrupting...or is it something else? Man's constant inhumanity to man.

Did the Goa'uld learn it from US?
